Typhoon Ompong weakens after hitting Cagayan

CEBU, Philippines — Typhoon Ompong (international name: Mangkhut) weakened after it slammed into Baggao town in Cagayan province Saturday.

In its 8 a.m. bulletin, state weather bureau PAGASA said that the maximum sustained winds of “Ompong” decreased to 185 kilometers per hour near the center from the previous 200 kilometers per hour.

It was last seen at the vicinity of Kabugao, Apayao.

Moving west at a pace of 185 kilometers per hour, “Ompong” is now on its way to Ilocos Norte.
Despite weakening, “Ompong” still poses threat to northern Luzon.

Stormy weather is expected over the areas under Signal Nos. 2, 3 and 4.

PAGASA also warned that there may be possible storm surge with height of up to six meters in Ilocos Norte, and two meters in Ilocos Sur, La Union and Pangasinan.

“Fisherfolks and those with small seacrafts are advised not to venture out over the seaboards of areas with tropical cyclone warning signal and the seaboards of Luzon and of Visayas and northern and western seaboards of Mindanao,” the state weather bureau said.

  • Monday morning: 1,295 kilometers west of Basco, Batanes (outside PAR)
